
Driving a semi-truck anywhere requires concentration, but some American highways demand significantly more from a professional driver than others. Steep mountain grades, sharp curves, extreme crosswinds, heavy snow, limited visibility, dense truck traffic, and long downhill sections can turn an ordinary freight route into a serious challenge.
A road that is relatively easy in a passenger car can feel completely different in an 80,000-pound tractor-trailer. A heavy truck takes longer to stop, gains speed rapidly on downhill grades, is more vulnerable to crosswinds, and needs much more room for curves and emergency maneuvers.
There is no single official federal ranking of America's "most dangerous roads for truck drivers." Crash rates also change from year to year.
